What if the biggest battle elite athletes face isn't on the field

What if the biggest battle elite athletes face isn't on the fieldWhat if the biggest battle elite athletes face isn't on the fieldWhat if the biggest battle elite athletes face isn't on the field

I became a mental performance coach the hard way—by losing everything and rebuilding it.

That's why I coach the way I do—because I know what it takes to perform under pressure, and I know what happens when you don't have the mental tools to handle it.

This isn't theory for me. It's lived experience.

Then it ended.  No warning. No goodbye. Just gone.

What followed wasn't just the loss of a career. It was the loss of identity. I'd built my entire sense of self around being an elite athlete. When that was taken away, I had to rebuild everything—my confidence, my purpose, my understanding of who I was without the jersey.

That rebuild took years. But it gave me something invaluable: I learned how to develop mental resilience under real adversity. I learned how to separate my worth from my performance. I learned that the mental skills that make you perform under pressure—focus, confidence, pressure management, identity clarity—are the exact same skills that help you rebuild when everything falls apart.

And I learned something else: most elite athletes are never taught these skills. They're expected to perform at the highest level with no framework for managing the mental and emotional weight of it.

That's the gap Attwell fills.

Today, I work with elite athletes across rugby league, lacrosse, surfing, football and competitive academics who are facing the same pressure I faced—the expectation to perform, the fear of failure, the identity questions, the perfectionism that can destroy you if you're not careful. They have talent. They have opportunity. What they often lack is the mental foundation to carry it all without breaking.

I hold multiple accreditations in athelete services and athlete wellbeing (IOC Sports Psychology, AIS Athlete Wellbeing Certification). I serve as Athlete Services Manager for Australian teams. But none of those credentials matter as much as this: I've been where my athletes are. I've felt the pressure. I've lost everything and rebuilt it. I know what it takes.

That lived experience—that breaking point and the rebuild that followed—is what allows me to coach with real credibility. I'm not teaching you how to manage pressure as an abstract concept. I'm teaching you the mental tools I had to develop to survive and thrive through elite competition and career-ending adversity.

My mission is simple: help elite athletes build the mental strength to carry their ambitions without breaking under the weight.

Not by lowering standards. Not by asking them to want less. But by giving them the psychological foundation to pursue excellence sustainably—with confidence, resilience, and the mental clarity to protect their wellbeing while they chase their biggest goals.

That's what I wish I'd had when I was 23.

That's what I'm committed to providing now.
